UNICEF is supporting search and rescue efforts and distributing necessities. Children urgently need shelter, medical care, food, clean water, blankets, warm clothes, and sanitation, with some also requiring support for their mental health. For Syrian children who had already been living through a humanitarian crisis caused by civil war and economic downturn, this latest tragedy has hit particularly hard.
The earthquake hit on 6 February, in the middle of the night, destroying thousands of buildings and damaging infrastructure. Many of the survivors, including families and orphaned children, are staying in temporary shelters or outside, unable to go back to their homes.
